World-wide nearly 20% of all available toplevel domain names use the extension .co.xx. For example .co.uk in Great Britain, .co.kr in Korea and .co.nz in New Zeeland. Internet users all over the world are used to this extension when searching for information on companies in specific countries.

45 countries currently promote the .co.xx extension as internationally accepted for commercial business. Soon (September 2008) with .co.nl an extension is introduced that will give the same international touch to your Dutch website. 

Short Summary:

• .co.nl is not managed by the Dutch registry but a private company 
• There will be 2 Sunrise periods:
  • 3rd quarter 2008: Sunrise period for owners of a .nl domain name of the same name (Grandfather)
  • 4th quarter 2008: Sunrise period for owners of a registered trademark

Introduction through different sunrise phases

Before .co.nl domains names will be available for free registration in the next year, owners of a corresponding .nl domain name and trademark owners will be given the opportunity to a preferred registration through a multi-level sunrise phase – similarly to the introduction of the .eu and .asia domain name.

The sunrise phase for .co.nl domain names breaks down as follows:

• Sunrise 1 (Grandfathers): During the Grandfather sunrise period only owners of a .nl domain name have exclusively the right to register the corresponding .co.nl domain name. Every registration is checked by an unbiased agent to make sure it is legitimate.
• Sunrise 2 (Registered Trademarks): Domain names that were not assigned during the first Sunrise period can eventually be registrered by trademark owners. Currently no information on which kind of trademarks will be accepted is available.

.co.nl can be registered by any company or individual! There is no other restriction than the two Sunrise periods
