Cybersquatting cases at WIPO set a new record in 2017

In its press release of March 14, 2018, WIPO publishes current figures of cybersquatting cases that it dealt with in 2017.

A total of 3,074 complaints were filed last year with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) by trademark owners for a total of 6,370 domains. The sectors of banking and finance, fashion plus internet and IT account for a third of all cases.

The main reasons for a complaint were phishing attempts, fraud and counterfeiting.

The majority of the complainants came from the USA (920). France (462), Great Britain (276), Germany (222) and Switzerland (143) followed. Most of the respondents also came from the US (758), followed by China (492), the United Kingdom (184) and France (100). 55 respondents came from Germany.

Since WIPO began its activities as arbitration and mediator in 1999, more than 39,000 complaints with over 73,000 domain names have been dealt with. Tendency: rising.

The press release with detailed figures is available on the WIPO website.
