Introduction of short domain names in France

The French registry AFNIC, like some other registries, is currently opening the namespace and will soon allow domain names under the toplevel domain .fr, which can consist of one or two characters.

The respective registry is responsible for the conditions for the registration of domain names. The specified length of domain names is one of the conditions and usually lies between three and 63 characters. Only a few registries allow fewer characters: In Portugal, domain names with two characters have been allowed to be registered since November 2014, in Germany, domain names consisting of only one character have been allowed since 2009. However, the maximum length is identical for each awarding point due to the system.

In addition to the usual characters from 0-9 and a-z, other letters with diacritical characters (mutated vowels or accents, for example) are permitted, so that 66 different characters are possible.

The short domain names are introduced in three different phases:

Sunrise (12/08/2014 - 02/09/2015)
During this time, right holders may preferably register short domain names and must provide appropriate proof. These are the following:

  • Holders of French or French (word) marks registered before July 9, 2012
  • French authorities
  • French companies founded before July 9, 2012
  • Surnames of French individuals

Landrush (02/16/2015 - 03/16/2015)
Domain names that were not registered in the sunrise phase can be registered in the so-called landrush phase. Depending on the prioritized registration time, the registry charges a one-time fee, which decreases every week. There are no further requirements to be met in this phase.

GA (from 03/17/2015)
From this date onwards, domain names that are still available can be registered without any further conditions or additional one-off fees.
