Introduction of the new generic TLDs brings WIPO a new record high in 2016

On 16 March 2017, WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) published the latest figures in a press release.

2016 will be a record year for the cases handled in the Arbitration and Mediation Division. The introduction of the new generic top-level domains (ngTLDs) has had a major impact.

A total of 3,036 cases with a total of 5,374 domains were processed. That is about 10% more complaints than in the previous year.

The complainants came from 109 countries, with the US leading the rankings with 895 cases. France (466), Germany (273) and Switzerland (180) follow. 12% of the cases can be attributed to the banking and finance sector, while 9% can be attributed to the fashion industry and heavy industry/mechanical engineering.

The press release with detailed figures is available on the WIPO website.
