New gTLDs - mid-term evaluation phase and government recommendations for action

In order for a new domain extension to become available to you, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) must check the corresponding application for the introduction of this new domain extension or select a suitable application for a new generic top-level domain (new gTLD) for several applicants.

These applications for new gTLDs are currently in the "Initial Evaluation" phase and are being processed by ICANN according to their respective priorities.

At the beginning of the evaluation phase, ICANN announced its intention to start with approximately 30 applications per week and to increase throughput to up to 100 applications during this phase. The evaluation phase for all 1,930 applications should be completed by the end of August. Currently, 700 applications have been reviewed in the first third of the planned duration, of which 628 have successfully completed this phase. It therefore remains to be seen whether ICANN will be able to accelerate the processes in the coming weeks in order to reach the planned end of the evaluation phase. To achieve this, however, it is necessary to almost double the current average number of applications being processed from 58 to 103.

The demand by the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) for increased audit requirements may lead to further delays. This committee represents the governments within ICANN and currently has issued recommendations for action on 240 applications - so-called early warnings - and has added 30 more after the deadline. The recommendations for action range from additions and changes to complete rejection of the application.
